GTA III PS2 Cheats

Grand Theft Auto III on PlayStation 2 (2001) is the smallest DualShock 2 code book in this wiki, and it is also the one people mix up most often. Many strings start R2, R2, not R1, R2. If you bring a Vice City opener onto Portland you will stand in the street tapping a combo the 2001 disc does not know. There are about twenty-three original PS2 cheats. That set includes a $250,000 drop, a full weapon dump, health, armor, and a Rhino that begins with six Circle presses. It does not include three separate weapon sets, a jetpack, or Big Head. Big Head is a Definitive Edition extra. Original PS2 does not have it.

Enter codes during live gameplay with the D-pad. Do not pause. Analog-stick directions fail the sting. Wanted level caps change by island: Portland tops out lower than Staunton Vale, and Shoreside Vale is the only island that can show the full six-star military response as the story unlocks. Raise-wanted still adds two stars, but it will not break the island cap. Read how to enter cheats if the sting never plays, and keep riot and attack-you off a story slot per save-file warnings.

Sibling pages: San Andreas, Vice City, Liberty City Stories for the 1998 prequel on the same city, and the codes hub. PC words such as GUNSGUNSGUNS and IFIWEREARICHMAN are not pad combos; see PS2 vs PC codes.

Health, money, weapons, and wanted

GTA III dumps the entire 2001 arsenal in one string. There is no weapon set 2 or set 3 on this disc. Re-enter the weapons combo to refill ammo. The cash sting can be repeated. Health also repairs the vehicle Claude is driving. Armor is a separate row. Clear wanted is the lower-wanted combo; raise wanted adds two stars up to the island maximum.

The all-weapons dump gives Claude the 2001 kit: baseball bat, pistol, shotgun, Uzi, AK-47, M16, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, flamethrower, and molotovs. Later 3D games split that pile into set 1 / set 2 / set 3. If you are hunting a minigun or a Desert Eagle, you are on the wrong disc; those live on weapon sets for Vice City and San Andreas.

Vehicles and handling

The Rhino is the only vehicle spawn in original PS2 GTA III. It is also the easy one to type wrong, because Vice City and San Andreas share a different twelve-button tank. Count six Circles, then R1, L2, L1, Triangle, Circle, Triangle. Spawn it in an open street in Portland, not in a garage doorway. Walkthrough notes are on how to spawn a tank. There is no jetpack. Flying cars exist. Invisible cars exist on original PS2 and were later removed from The Definitive Edition. Better driving adds grip and an L3 car jump.

Destroy cars wipes currently loaded traffic. Do not fire it during a convoy mission unless you want the game to delete the vehicle you were supposed to follow. Invisible cars are a visual toy; collision is still there. Rank the tank as useful chaos and flying cars as sandbox-only on the tier list.

Time, weather, pedestrians, and outfits

Slow-mo and fast-mo are gameplay speed, not the clock. Speed up time is the clock. Weather paints share an L1, L2, R1, R2, R2, R1, L2 opener and change only the last face button. Riot, peds-attack-you, and peds-fight-each-other are the flags that do not belong on a 100% slot. More gore is a visual multiplier, not a combat buff. All outfits cycles Claude through unlocked looks; it is not a story skip and it will not replace the island unlocks.

Island wanted caps and Definitive Edition notes

Portland will not give you a six-star military spawn just because you mashed raise-wanted. The story gates the cap as you unlock bridges. That is why a Portland sandbox feels quieter than a Shoreside one even with the same combo. If a remaster list shows Big Head (the Konami-style Up, Up, Down, Down string), that row is Definitive Edition only. Do not add it to an original PS2 memory card session and then blame the pad. Invisible cars are an original PS2 row that later remasters dropped. Raise and lower wanted were also shuffled in some remaster documentation; on the 2001 disc they work as the table above.

GTA III is the disc you play when you want cash, a single weapon dump, and a tank that starts with six Circles. It is not the disc for a jetpack, a Hydra, or three weapon tiers. When you need those, change to San Andreas or compare loadouts on weapon sets. When you want 1986 Vice instead of 2001 Liberty, open Vice City. FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers for DualShock 2 codes, saves, and fake lists.

How many cheat codes does GTA III have on PS2?

About twenty-three original DualShock 2 combos. That set includes $250k, all weapons, health, armor, and the six-Circle Rhino. It does not include Big Head, which is Definitive Edition only. See this GTA III list.

Why does the weapons code start with R2, R2?

GTA III uses R2, R2 openers for several player cheats. Vice City and San Andreas often start weapon sets with R1, R2. Do not mix lists. The hub map is codes.

Does wanted level cap change by island?

Yes. Portland, Staunton Vale, and Shoreside Vale use different wanted caps as the story unlocks. Raise-wanted adds two stars but will not break the current island maximum. Mission-safe restocks are ranked on mission-friendly.

Is Big Head on original PS2 GTA III?

No. Big Head is a Definitive Edition extra. Original PS2 does not have it. Platform mixing belongs on PS2 vs PC codes and fake codes.

How do I spawn the Rhino in GTA III?

Circle six times, then R1, L2, L1, Triangle, Circle, Triangle. That is not the Vice City / San Andreas tank. See how to spawn a tank.

Should I save after a riot?

Not on a story slot. Riot and peds-attack-you are hard to undo. Keep a clean save as described in save-file warnings.
